Born in Suffern, NY, Alison was interested in animals and art from a young age. She created numerous commissioned animal portraits and went on to graduate with a BFA from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, and an MFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts, London. In recent years, her work explores a deeper interest in animals as subject matter in relation to the complicated nature of memory and thought.

She lives and works in Northern Virginia.

Statement

I focus on exploring emotional vulnerability and the nature of memory through  my symbolic language of animals and fabric. The greyhound and the horse, two sensitive and often mistreated animals, have been depicted in art for thousands of years. In my work, I interpret them as witnesses to the unseen and chaotic world of anxiety, mental illness, and dementia. The recurring image of an incomplete greyhound disappearing into the painting represents fading and disjointed memory and the sensation of being lost within it. The fabric is depicted either floating through like a passing thought, or twisted onto a bed or similar surface. The morphing shapes that are created echo the folds and visual complexities of a brain, but also the change that is constantly occurring as our minds age. I want to create a space in these paintings where thoughts, memories, and vulnerabilities can dwell in a contained space.
